Hand knitting woolies

After receiving many requests and here I am open up for orders.

I'm still in progress working out the pricing, it's really a tough job. But basically the price will
include the cost of the wool yarn, shipping and last but not least my hourly time spend.

PLEASE, please, please bear with me as I'm a mom to 2 young kids, therefore it will takes a little longer time to complete one longies or soaker.

Note: The bigger size it is, the longer time it takes.

These are some policies :

1) It will takes around 2-3 weeks for the wool yarn to arrive (am ordering from overseas). Hence, the knitting project will only start when I received the yarn. So when I mention it will takes 3 weeks to complete, the week will start after I receive the yarn or when I email you to notify (if previously I'm working on other's woolies).

2) Full payment shall be made before I place order to buy yarn or before I start knitting.

3) All patterns are licensed (I'm paying for them). I refuse to knit free pattern for sale.

4) All wool soaker / longies/ shorties will be washed and lanolised before I send to you.

5) All orders will be in queue, meaning first come first serve unless there's special arrangement agreed among each parties.

6) If you are looking for woolies specially for super heavywetter, feel free to contact me. It will be a different quote.

7) This is ONLY applicable to MALAYSIAN customers. Payment can be made via online transfer - Maybank and CIMB. Customer outside Malaysia please email me separately.

Looking for Wool Soaker?

Wool cover can be stinky too!

Anyone encounter this before? Well, I did!

Maybe I didn't wash so frequently (imagine after 1 month of use... hehe...)...
Maybe the fitted diaper itself is not absorbent enough...
Maybe it's time for new lanolizing...
Maybe it was not wash throughly after previous use...
Maybe the cover already been use for a long time with so many wash and lanolizing in between... (Still you got to wash and rinse more often when it's very stinky)

I was first thought most probably it's the fitted diaper itself that stink but I discovered even with baby's first pee, the horrible smell already spread in the room. A few times like this made me concluded that the cover itself stink too!

SOLUTION:
Wash and rinse several times (drying in between) before lanolise. This is to make sure you wash away the old lanolin which already covered layers by layers for so long... in my case I use wool almost everynight. Be it longies, soaker, shorties... wash, rinse and go under the sun once a while.

NOTE:
It's not recommended to put the woolies under the sun as this will break the fiber. But occassionally (in this case for example) is fine.

I knitted, undone, re-knitted, changed pattern,... and lots more through trial and errors. Finally, they are done BUT still big and long on my DS! Arrgh... nevermind, still can be use. All I need now is more wool yarns as I'm seriously addicted... thinking to crochet a soaker or a shorties! Aww... the skirty is soooo cute! But my girl already out of diaper!

I think I'm going nuts about knitting these woolies...

Discovery about wool soaker!

It's been very hot these few days but guess what... I still wear DS with fitted diaper with wool soaker during daytime. Feels and sounds hot, right? To my surprise, the fitted diaper's edges in which I touched was wet became dry by the time I changed him! I remembered lotusutol from Aussie told me only if the weather is very dry the fitted diaper under wool will get dry very fast.

Well, at least I experimented it here in Malaysia even the fitted diaper is not totally dry (guess the weather here is not as dry as Aussie?)... Therefore, proof of wool is breathable as a diaper cover! ~Simply in love with wool....~

It's done!

The first ever knitted wool longies! Completed in 2 months time... I think I'm slow...

This is a size M but I think it's able to fit baby till 1 year old... Initially wish to knit a shorties but yarn not enough so I joined with another colour till it's enough to be a longies.

I think I'm addicted now... Am knitting size newborn and S from the same pattern but change the knitting method abit... and I can't believe I started to knit in round!!!

A View of Knitted Wool Soakers

Feel so nice to have 3 different sizes wool soakers knitted! Sorry for the distorted picture as the Large one (rightmost) is currently in use, so not many chance to have it stays in the cabinet. Therefore, this is a rare picture to have 3 of them together... LOL!

In fact size S and M are knitted from the same pattern but by the time I was knitting the M one, MIL and myself were worry the wool yarn might not be enough. Hence, we changed the pattern at the leg casing. Ta-dah! New pattern was borned! Oh yes, I used all 400meter wool yarn and left just a little bit for emergency use which I do not know when will need it.

I realized wool soaker will get bigger after several wash or use more often. Not sure about the wool cover? In fact, no need to get bigger size. Another good point is I have the chance to alter or loosen the leg casing opening when my gal's thigh grew bigger... later still can knit back to its original size. How fun!

Am I going to knit more? Probably... maybe will try wool longies but anyone want to sponsor me the wool yarn?

p/s: Knitting is very challenging... just imagine you have so many undo and redo till almost give up! No wonder knitted wool items are so expensive... But seeing the end products is simply rewarding...

Lanolizing Wool Soaker

I'm supposed to update this a long time ago but feel so lazy as it has so many pictures to be included. Well, I think I want to get it done so here goes... Oh yes, before I forgot, I have wool soaker but not the commercial wool cover and this one required to be hand-washed.

I used Lansinoh lanolin to lanolize the wool soaker... in fact as long as it's 100% pure lanolin any brand will do.
1) Firstly, get an empty container as we will need to melt the lanolin in it. Remember to use hot water for the melting purpose.



2) Next, a pea-sized of lanolin will be enough for a soaker. If you have wool longies I suppose you might need to use more lanolin.

3) Add hot water ( I don't use boiling hot but it works too) and you will notice the lanolin starts to melt. Cover the container and shake well. Preferably get a see through container with lid/cover so that you can shake it without pouring out and see for yourself whether it's already all melt.

4) I then let aside the lanolin and go straight to wash the wool soaker using warm water (please check whether your wool item can be washed in cold or warm?). I use the free gift from Sheepish Grin woolwash bar to wash the soaker. Lather on hands and rub all over with both hands or alternately I lather under the water and that produce the soapy water for washing.

5) Rinse the soaker and prepare a big container or washing pail that is big enough to lay the soaker in it. I think laying the wool soaker horizontal or vertical is not a problem. Please correct me if this has differences and purpose.

6) Set water level just to cover the wool item.

7) Pour the lanolin that was prepared earlier into the water and stir to mix. Let it set for at least 30 minutes or overnight. I prefer later but frankly speaking they don't differ in any way.

There you go, after lanolizing you will need to squeeze out excess water and air dry it. My wool soaker takes 2 days for 100% dry and after the lanolizing I can reuse it for at least a month without washing!!! Simply amazing....

Fitted nappy + wool soaker for daytime & outing

Never tried this combination until recently and all my worries were gone after we went out for almost 3 hours. No leak, no dampness when carrying my heavywetter dd and she looks as happy as before walking around. But the fitted diaper was... phew... soaking wet.

I'm glad that it works plus no compression leakage too. Therefore, instead of PUL diaper cover, right now I have extra option. Believe me, wool is so breathable and I never encounter my dd's butt sweating... which I thought she would... haha... LOL!

Anyway, I think it could be hot if walking under the hot sun. Well... who never sweat under the hot sun? Even we wear cotton shirt will be sweating too. If you think it will be hot just avoid using it at places that you think it's not suitable.

When NOT to lanolise?

When you see this...



I left the wool soaker to be soaked in the sink and was going to wash it. But 15 minutes later I returned, the soaker is still "floating" on top of the water. Meaning you still have enough lanolin, it's alright not to lanolize for this wash.

My DD's Wool Soaker

These are the wool soaker that I used on my dd only for night diapering at the moment. The violet soaker is a customised wool soaker from USA, and the blue soaker is a handknitted version. Both of them works beautifully with fitted nappy and they are so soft and breathable.

Wool is hot?
Wool cover won't be hot in tropical country as wool will be cold in warm country and warm in cold country. But to be frank, I never use it during daytime and my gal is heat sensitive. I might try one day and will update again in this blog.

Wool, stink?
Wool also doesn't stink after a few usage (provided it is lanolized) and I only wash it after 1 month and that's because I used it alternate day before I got enough fitted nappy for my gal night diapering. Once I started to use every night after almost 1 month of alternate witl fleece poacket diaper, the wool soaker need to be washed every 3 weeks. By 3 weeks, yes you will start to smell urine on the cover.
To determine whether the cover need to be washed: Always air dry the cover after use and it's amazing that it doesn't smell anything after 1 week of use. This works because the lanolin neutralized the ammonia (urine) . You still can use it over many nights before it's time to be wash.

Wool is itchy?
This question brought up by MIL but she was surprised that the wool used for wool cover has no such issue. Just make sure it's 100% pure wool and since I hand knitted one I only go for 100% pure wool with hand wash only. Even the soaker I bought from US is meant for hand washing too. So, I don't have experience in machine washable wool cover.

Wool needs lanolizing
Yes and at the moment I use Lansinoh lanolin which is a nipple cream for nursing mothers. Lanolin is the reason why wool cover is water-resistant (please note: it's not waterproof!) and that is the oil from sheep that prevent the body of the sheep to get wet in rainy days. That's why when you feel the wool soaker is not performing well, encounter leaks then it's the time for lanolizing. I'll have a post later on how I lanolized my soaker.

Wool is expensive
This is true and it is the most expensive diaper cover but it's also an ultimate solution for heavywetter. I don't mind using wool cover or soaker from recycle wool (meaning they cut from wool sweater, wool jacket, and so on) and these are more cheaper alternative and they function exactly the same as brand new wool diaper cover from manufacturer. Or really frugal method, knit your own if you are a knitter as there are so many free patterns from the web.

Wool Soaker for Younger Babies?

I've been wondering whether wool diaper cover is suitable for young babies who is still not yet able to turn?

As we all know wool is very breathable and it's a great solution for heavywetter as it can evaporate moisture. I think this is refer to babies who is able to turn while sleeping. Otherwise, how to overcome the compression issue?? Hmm... newborn or younger babies they sleep or sit in the same place for longer time such as in the car seat. Isn't this will cause compression and the seat will be wet?

Can anyone share on issues encountered when using wool diaper cover on newborn or young infant?
